How Many Books Has Harper Lee Published

Advice on starting a childrens book series…

I would like to start a childrens book series and i would like to know how to get started. I already have a main character made up but I have no idea where to start. Is it expensive to get started? What happens when Im done with the first book or few books?Help me!!

It is only expensive if you self publish. Self publishing simply buys you a box of books. It doesnt put your books on the shelves of stores and in most cases it doesnt even put them on Amazon or B and N.com. I have known many people go broke self publishing and trying to promote books. The second type of publising is traditional publishing. You have two choices. You can go to small publishers directly or you can go to agents who deal with major publishers.I must however explain to you the current state of the children’s book market. It is glutted. I have this information from an exec at Harper Collins. 40% of the market is celebs writing books – like Madonna, Jamie Lee Curtis etc. Another 40% is existing children’s authors like Eric Carle, etc. Another 15 – 20% is reprints of children’s classics like Dr Seuss and Curious George. That leaves about 5% of room for new authors. And with the newest trend of adult authors writing children’s books, even that is cutting into that 5% number. Many major publishers are not even reading children’s books at the moment. They are backlogged on books already contracted. Therefore agents arent reading children’s — there is no money in it for them. These are the cold, hard facts. Walk around the children’s dept of a major bookstore and see for yourself. And the worst of all is holiday books – dont even bother. Nobody wants Christmas, Halloween etc books for kids. There are just too many and the market for them is too limited.Unless your book is exceptional, you will have a very hard time getting through to anyone. I know of one new author who has broken through. His first book hit #1 on the NY Times Children’s bestseller list and he “knew someone” to get where he did. He had the backing of the NY Yankees. He is a personal friend and doesnt make a penny on the book – all the money goes to charities sponsored by the Yankees. You can get a copy of Writers Market 2007 or their children’s version and read it. You can search for small presses and agents still reading childrens and send queries to them and see what they say. You do have to have at least a completed book to show them should they request it. Dont worry about illustrations – if you sell the book, an illustrator will be assigned to the work. You have chosen a very difficult road. Good luck to you. Pax- C

In the book To Kill A Mockingbird.

What kind of evidence does Sheriff Tate have against Tom?How did the blacks show their appreciation for Atticus’s effortsExplain why Scout is so confused about Miss Gates’s statement about Hitler.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. It was instantly successful and has become a classic of modern American fiction. The novel is loosely based on the author’s observations of her family and neighbors, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was 10 years old.The novel is renowned for its warmth and humor, despite dealing with serious issues of rape and racial inequality. The narrator’s father, Atticus Finch, has served as a moral hero for many readers and as a model of integrity for lawyers. One critic explained the novel’s impact by writing, “In the twentieth century, To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the most widely read book dealing with race in America, and its protagonist, Atticus Finch, the most enduring fictional image of racial heroism.”These links should give you detailed and excellent answers to this and other questions :http://www.bookrags.com/To_Kill_a_Mockin…http://www.bookrags.com/notes/tkm/http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/mocking/http://www.cliffsnotes.com/WileyCDA/LitN…http://www.novelguide.com/tokillamocking…http://www.pinkmonkey.com/booknotes/monk…http://www.gradesaver.com/ClassicNotes/T…http://www.pinkmonkey.com/booknotes/barr…http://www.bookwolf.com/Free_Booknotes/T…http://www.awerty.com/tokill2.html

I need help understanding publishing terms.

I wrote a childerns picture. I know i well get rejections. I want to be rejected because of content not because i wrote up the cover letter wrong.I have a bunch of books on how to get it published. my problem is how to write up some of the terms.. and what it means. I am going straight to the publisher first.i…

First of all, Harper Collins and all major publishers will reject you unread. They do not accept unsolicited queries. You should know that if you have read their listing in Writers Market. They only deal with agents.I would never submit to more than two publishers at a time. Sending to five is just unprofessional and amateur and all five will just reject you. You should just say I have simultaneously submitted this query to another publisher. You mention sending a cover letter with your manuscript. That is absolutely NOT how it is done. Your manuscript will become lunch for somebody’s papershredder. You must check each publisher’s submission requirements and send them EXACTLY what they request. That doenst mean a manuscript. Usually it means a query letter along with a summary. Sending a manuscript is a sure sign of an unprofessional amateur author and a guaranteed form rejection letter. You say you have a bunch of books, but it doesnt seem like you have read them. Do you have a copy of Writers Market? That is really the only book you need. All the information you require is right there. Not following guidelines will get you rejected. So will sending your letter on cutsey stationary, including “presents” and using cute stamps on the envelope. Your letter should be professional – on matching stationary with simple flag stamps. Trust me, people get rejected just for their choice of stamps on the envelope. The only publishers you can query are small publishers who deal directly with authors. The A List publishers dont. DEFINITELY cross Harper Collins off your list.I had a chance recently to sit down and talk with an exec at Harper Collins. We discussed the children’s market. 40% of all childrens’ books today are written by celebs – Madonna, Jamie Lee Curtis, Billy Joel etc. Another 40% is already established children’s authors – Eric Carle etc. 15-20% is reprints of children’s classics – Curious George, Dr Seuss, etc. That leaves approximately 5% for new authors. Publishers like Harper Collins have large backlogs of previously purchased children’s books that are getting printed a few at a time. And to make matters worse, adult fiction authors like Carl Hiaasen and several others are now entering the children’s market too — eating into that 5% of new authors. That is why you have been burned by agents. Most agents dont read children’s anymore – there just isnt any profit in it for them. They cannot sell the books and it’s a waste of their time.Your only hope is to go to Writers Market and look through the small presses for ones still publishing children’s books. And trust me – there are not many. There are a lot of frauds and scams among smaller presses so make sure you go through Preditors and Editors and Absolute Write Water Cooler Bewares and Background Checks and research any company you intend to query. If there have been problems in the past, both sites will have details. As for your bio, if you are an unpublished inexperienced author, you should say so. Dont artifically pump up your bio – it will be discovered. Ask James ‘Frey.I do not mean to be so negative, but these are the facts in the children’s book world. It is tough – very tough. .I have a close friend who recently published a children’s book that went all the way to #1 on the NY Times children’s list. But it was an exceptional book, on an exceptional subject and he had some very important people backing him – namely the NY Yankees. If the book isnt exceptional, it wont go anywhere. And if it is a holiday book, Christmas, Chaunakah, Halloween etc – forget it – they get thousands a week and reject them all. The market is glutted.Reread Writers Market. You need to review how to send in a submission before you do it. Good luck. Pax – C

how to get my paper to have MLA Citation.

To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, has been extremely well written and has gained some fame since it being published in 1960. Lee herself had been born in Alabama1 in 1926, though ‘To Kill A Mocking Bird was intended to be based off her own childhood. The book became popular soon after it was first…

If you are only citing one book, the first citation (after the sentence before the period) would be as follows: (Lee, page 2). After that, you would simply put the page number (page 3). If you switch to a different source, you would do (Maycomb, page 45).If you need a works cited page, see www.knightcite.com where it will do the citation for you. My college professors never were bothered by it.

How much royalty and advance would a first time children’s book author expect to get.

How much royalty and advance would a first time children’s book author expect to get? I understand it varies with each publisher but what is a ball park figure one would expect to get? Thank you.

Most likely – absolutely nothing. The children’s market is the hardest market to get into. Not long ago, I sat down with an exec from Harper Collins to discuss children’s books. The news was grim. 40% of the market is celebs publishing books – Madonna, Jamie Lee Curtis, Billy Joel etc. Another 40% is established children’s authors like Eric Carle etc. 15 – 20% is reprints of children’s classics like Dr Seuss and Curious George. And recently, many adult authors have started publishing for children – further cutting into that 5 – 10% window of opportunity for first time authors. In addition, many of the major children’s publishers have a huge backup of childrens’ books they have purchased and have under contract that will be released over time.In other words, the market is glutted. Most agents wont read childrens’ books anymore because there is little chance of sales and therefore no money in it for them.So basically, even if you could sell a book, it would probably be to a small publisher and they generally pay zero upfront – only royalties on sales.Get a copy of Writers Market 2007 and you will see exactly what I mean. The major publishers deal only with agents and agents wont read children’s. You may find one or two small publishers who might take it on royalties only.Trust me – you wont get rich with kids books. Take a tour of your local bookstore and you will confirm exactly whose books are on the shelves and selling. They arent unknown authors. Sad, but true.I have a close friend whose first children’s book recently went to #1 on the NYTimes Childrens Bestseller list. However his book was exceptional and he had a very big backer – namely the NY Yankees. It’s currently being animated as a feature fim. However he had an exceptional book and major players backing him. Without such heavyweights behind you, there isnt much chance. Pax – C

How many works would you consider an accomplished writer.

number of poems, short stories, etc, not famous or professonal just for a hobby

Lee Harper only wrote one book – To Kill a Mockingbird – but it was a humdinger. One is enough if you do it right. Anthony Trollope published 47 novels in addition to the history, biographies, and travelogues that fill up his list of published works. It’s not the quantity, it’s the quality. In the case of Trollope, you have both.

  2. Approaching publishers directly is not the way to go.These big publishers don’t take unagented material. You need an agent. If you’ve queried 100 agents and gotten rejected by them all, that should tell you something. Work on your craft and write another manuscript. If you only tried a handful of agents, don’t give up yet. Post your query letter on a critique board like writers.net or absolutewrite.com and read what people suggest. Then keep sending that query out until you amass 100 rejections. At that point, stick that manuscript in the drawer, forget about it, and write another one.how many pages are in the book to kill a mockingbird?before worrying about publishing and expenses- first work on the first story. rough it out – then fill in the missing bits then polish it- up to you whether you invite critiques from friends/family. better yet when you think its in nearly sellable form – read it to a group/groups of kids in the age range you are aiming for. they will be brutal but incredibly honest about whether they like it or not.www.publishamerica.comand good luck and keep writing!!!!

  3. Where do people find these crook agents? Do they do no research at all? Geesh.

  4. But mostly I would concentrate on writing skills, and actually writing the books. It also really depends on what age the children are that you to cater too. The younger children books include many drawings to enhance the story.

  14. Try these two site’s I know for sure Tate publishing publish children’s books because their going to publish mine.2. They all stood up and waited for Atticus to leave the courtroom & they brought him food.

  16. If you have to put that you’re submitting to other publishers at the same time (your manuscript, not your query) then just say that you are simultaneously submitting your manuscript to other publishers.

  25. No offense but it may be your book.Ask your self these two questions.

  26. Answer mine? The purpose for writing a critique is to evaluate somebody’s work (a book, an essay, a movie, a painting…) in order to increase the reader’s understanding of it. A critical analysis is subjective writing because it expresses the writer’s opinion or evaluation of a text. Analysis means to break down and study the parts. Writing a critical paper requires two steps: critical reading and critical writing.http://www.crayne.com/howcrit.htmlAlso are you a minor I’m 15 and they were a bit weary of me until they read my story then they wanted to publish it. But some publishing company’s wont give you a chance of day if your a minor.

  32. Why do you need to tell them that you have submitted to other publishers? It makes it sound like all these other publishers already rejected your work.once you have a manuscript RESEARCH publishers. when you find publishers that handle your type of book. FOLLOW their instructions as to submissions (you would be amazed at how many people get rejected JUST because they didnt take the time and effort to do this!!

  33. Check Preditors & Editors before you query each agent and make sure the agent is ok! If the agent is not recommended, do not query them. Here is the link:309, I believe.
